When Passive and Aggressive Meet At a Party

We had LittleBird's birthday party this weekend. My mom flew into town on Friday to help out. We always love having her here, but she and I do not see eye to eye on many issues.

During the party, a small cluster of parents were standing chatting. I don't even remember what we were talking about when my mom turned to me and told me that I needed to get a job.

(Insert blind-side sound effect here)

I stammered something to the effect of Yeah, well, who is going to watch the kids? Her response to which was that they were soon in school, and that I needed to get a job so we could buy a house and get on with our lives.

I have blacked out the rest of anything she said at that point.

We talked about it later, and supposedly my interpretation was not her intention. Even so, why not wait until after the party? Who the fuck says something like that in front of other people?

No one warned me that my daughter's unicorn party would include a skewering of my ego by my mother.

Holy Crap! Seriously? Wow. I haven't a response for that one.

I think sometimes being a parent makes someone think it gives them the license to say what they think when they think. Let's hope the rest of us learn the art of tact. If it's any consolation, she probably felt bad about it later.

Whoa. Is being a wife and mother somehow NOT a worthy fulltime vocation in her sample universe? WTF?

Disclaimer: I work outside my home. A lot. Too much. Every day. And I still haven't the means to 'get on with life' (whatever that might bring...)

Bless you for not decking HER halls with boughs of something or other right on the spot. She may be envious of you; as a mom, my softest mushy spot is any suggestion that I don't spend enough time or do enough things with my daughter. Breathe.

Consider it an message that should cause her to reboot.
