A Taste of Freedom

Yesterday, for the first time in three and a half years, I had a morning without my children hanging from my skirt.

Awesome doesn't even begin to describe it.

I dropped both kids off at their preschool. LittleBird was nonplussed, LittleMan was a wreck. It is hard to leave him when he is crying, but I know he stops after a few minutes and has a good time despite himself.

I felt I ought to be productive. There are groceries to be purchased, laundry to be done.

And I said fuck it.

I went to Ross to look for a lunch box for LittleMan, but mainly because I have been dying to go and was excited to just roam in their kitchen section without worrying about bodily harm to a toddler with the propensity to yank knives and serving platters off of shelves.

I found the lunch box.

I bought a cheese grater.

I bought a package of Pumpkin Spice coffee so I can make my own lattes at home and not give another dime to Starbucks.

I also bought a package of Coconut Cream coffee. It might be nasty, but I am intrigued.

The best part? We are still relatively new in town, and I can count on one hand how many people I know well enough to recognize in public. While at Ross, my closest friend here in DC walked right by me. Talk about fate.

So, until I am on the co-op schedule at the school, every Tuesday and Thursday morning are blissfully mine. I cannot afford to hit the stores every time I am free, but the fact that I can go out on my own gives me hope that I can regain a little of myself. I am not always Mom. Sometimes, I am just the chick wandering Ross with a creepy, self-satisfied grin on her face.

What's this Pumpkin Spice coffee you speak of? I must have a taste! I surely hope Kroger carries it.

Woo hoo! That's awesome, hon. Freedom is such a sweet thing. Ty-man is taking the kids to his parents' house tomorrow morning. Ahhhh, a full 24 hours alone. I might just roll around in the floor. :)

I know I answered this yesterday, but here it is, RP-free. *sigh*

I'm so glad you got out of the house for awhile on your own. That can be such an amazing rush when you have little kids at home. It almost feels as if you're doing something wrong!

Here's to more days of gallivanting around town on your lonesome.

Peace - D

Congrats! Zach used to through fits at day care as well, but he actually really seems to enjoy it now. Enjoy some free time!

I'm not a parent yet but I know how my mom's personal time is still so important to her to this day. Way to go on taking some time just for yourself.

That's so awesome. I remember that feeling from when my guy started daycare in the mornings. In the first couple of weeks I spent some time at Target, myself. I went to a movie alone too. Sometimes I still miss him, but its so nice to be able to get things done quickly!

Sometimes I really, really miss DC.

Glad you got some "me" time!

There are few things like time alone that make me smile.

I gave blood today - although my iron was too low to give the double red I'd scheduled, they let me give whole blood.

The guy working with me thought I was passing out because I'd closed my eyes and enjoyed being prone with no one speaking to me for more than 30 seconds. It was BLISSFUL. How sick is THAT?

any mom who has kids will know that 'look' of a few minutes of freedom...
