The Cost of the Wow Factor

Some of us are easy to please. My neighbor? Not so much.

They are having their kitchen renovated. The existing floor plan was not a very good use of space and was fifty years old. There was no pantry, and the place just did not function well. I would say they are spending between $20,000-$30,000 to have their entire kitchen ripped out and redone. In their eyes, small beans compared to what they could have paid. They did not want to go gourmet, just an updated and functional kitchen. This process is supposed to take about three weeks, and for the past week and a half they have been living with no kitchen at all.

When I spoke to my neighbor over the weekend, I learned that the cabinets had been installed.

Me: Oh my god! That is awesome! Did you just walk into the kitchen and go "Ahhhhhh!" (that is my blog translation of angels singing).

NeighborChick: Eh. (shrugs shoulders). Not so much.

Me: Seriously? Don't the cabinets look fabulous? Do you not want to weep for joy when you see how the new kitchen is turning out?

NeighborChick: Nah. I mean, the cabinets are okay. I don't know if we'd spent $50,000 on the kitchen that I'd hear angels singing.

Me: Well, I am going to come over when the kitchen is done, and I am going to weep for joy when I see how great it looks.

I am utterly confused by this entire dialogue. You are going to spend that kind of money on a major upgrade to your house and not feel the teeniest bit of excitement? Not even a thank god it's nearly done smile?

Hubbie and I talked about it this weekend. Our kitchen is very small. We could get it redone in a decent fashion at IKEA for under $2,000. I would turn cartwheels if we were not renting and in a position to turn a non-functional space into something workable.

What about you? If you and your better half dropped 30K on a project, would you expect them to be excited about it? What is the price of your wow factor?

For 30k I could make my apartment into my dream house. But too bad I don't have the 30k and even if I did, I'm renting, so I wouldn't put any money into this place since it isn't mine and we don't want to stay here. I have been tempted however to spend 1000 and get some wood flooring put in the living room. But then it's the same thing again, why spend money on something that I won't be able to take with us when we move?

For that kind of money I'd better be orgasmic.

Holy crap. I have no idea how much it would cost to upgrade our kitchen or bathroom or whatever room, but I know that when I do it? I will be ecstatic.

Go kick that chick in the knees and we'll take over her kitchen! :)

For 20-30K, I'd better be feeling some WOW. Otherwise, I'd realize that I had finally lost my cotton-pickin' mind!

Peace - D

For $30k, it better be a host of angels singing.

Man, I don't know. I err on the side of being slightly less excited than I should. I think I must have been raised that way - keep things reserved.

@Bluestreak: Yeah, same goes for us here. That is my main frustration with our current living situation. We can't make it better.

@Gypsy: Multiples.

@CMGD: Damn woman, I would kill for your kitchen. But we always have an eye for making things better. I hear ya on that one.

@RiverPoet: I think she may have.

@Patois: LOL You said it!

@AFreeMan: Is it because it is the kitchen area and not tech equipment? What kind of $30K investment would make you go Wow?

If it was a "spare" $30g (I know, right?), I'd be very excited. But, if I killed the savings account to do it because the floor was rotted from leaky plumbing, I would not be happy.

Man, I really need to win the lottery.

Hells yes. 30G on renovations better give me a raging hardon. I'd be totally excited. But who knows... maybe she has something else going on. Maybe he picked the cabinets. Maybe she had her heart set on heart pine. Maybe she'd rather have had plastic surgery. Who knows.

But for the record, a $2,ooo Ikea kitchen would rock my world too.

For our kitchen, my husband felt that I should be pretty damn grateful when he dropped 350 Euros on a wall of kitchen cabinets, a fridge, an oven, a sink and a fan. I was. It's really too bad that his deal of the century was mostly crap from a cheap discount store where all of the appliances weren't under warranty and all the notices were in Italian.

Personally, I would kill for a bathroom right now. We've been six months without and I'm getting tired of showering in a space that was never meant to hold a bathtub.

Uh. It's a long story.

But 30 Grand? God. If it would finish the renos in my house I would be OVER THE MOON!
